Camping cat parent shares adventuring advice with her Snow Bengal boy, Yeti; the comment section turns into a camper Q&A that every cat owner with a hiking spirit should know

Some people's dream of having an adventuring feline buddy is a reality.

Let's admit it, cat people, we're a little bit jealous of dog people for one thing - if you adopt a dog, you get to take your dog quite literally everywhere. Even most restaurants allow a well-behaved dog inside. There are dog beaches, dog parks, and even ice cream shops that sell a doggo-specialty ice cream. But for cats? None of that exists. But the thing is - it's not that cats can't. Most of them just don't want to do all that (maybe besides the ice cream - we've yet to see a cat who refuses any snack). And that's ok, because cats are not dogs. But some cats… let's just say they're just built a little differently.

Take hiking-cat Yeti, for example - camping for days and hiking long distances with his humans. His mama posted some of the most gorgeous hiking cat pictures we've seen recently. But she didn't do just that - she detailed the entire process, and answered every cat person's question in the comment section. We've learned so many new things ourselves! And we kind of think of ourselves as cat experts here, so that should tell you something about the quality of information she has.

But that's the meowgical power of the online cat community - every cat person is eager to help other cat parents. When a cat person needs help, another one with more experience or knowledge will always be there, at the ready, to give advice and a paw to lean on. We think we all do it not just because we appreciate other cat people (and we do, a lot), but because we know it's indirectly helping their cats. And helping cats is always a noble task. Even if it means helping them spend time with their humans in nature with useful tips.

    UbiquitousChicken OP Omg could you imagine how cute that would be, his own sleeping bag! yes he has been wearing that vest for walks in the cold since January, and he was wearing it the night he slept the best. He must've been a touch chilly the other nights. It was 47°F out.

    UbiquitousChicken OP When he was sleeping in the tent, I would get anxious doing things around camp because I couldn't see him and didn't have a prior expectation of how he might behave, so I was constantly peeking in at him sleeping and just going "awwww" all afternoon.

    UbiquitousChicken OP It was paracord strung between two trees with a carribener attached to a 30 foot retractable leash (having the retractable leash prevents some tangles. Not from him weaving in and out of obstacles, but it does help keep it from tangling his legs in it.

    UbiquitousChicken OP We use Bravecto which is a prescription flea and tick medication. You dose every 3 months, and I do it on the solstice and equinoxes to remember. (We usually skip December though, because it's expensive, like $60 per dose per cat and we don't have fleas and ticks here at that time of year).

  • These two pictures with the birds are definitely our favorite! We just think of our cats and how utterly excited they'd be to be this up close to a bird, which they usually just see through the window. Think about a cat who just started to walk on a leash outside and discovers the magic of nature and what it has to offer - that must be ameowzing to them!

    UbiquitousChicken OP He is!! He's honestly been such a difficult kitten, because all he has ever wanted to do is pounce the other cats in the household. One won't set him straight and he loves chasing her in particular, until she screams and pees. So he is still on supervised visitation only, over a year after we got him (so basically we separate him from the other cats while we are sleeping and at work).

    We quickly discovered that going outside was the main thing that could get his energy released in a positive way, so we take him outside twice a day whenever possible. We couldn't go out today due to horrible air quality and he was sad about it. He is so good at home if we've exhausted him with walks and car rides.
